For one day and one night in Vegas, a quirky group of friends travel to the Chapel of Blue Suede Shoes for Ross and Norah’s wedding. Things begin to go awry when an alarm is heard and the Chapel goes into lock down. Friends against friends, former lovers, an Elvis impersonator, and a drag queen all confined in one small space trying to determine what to do and who to trust. Laughter, tears, murder, and a whole lot of pop culture references will keep the audience entertained and fulfiled through this brand new piece of theatre. We wouldn’t be SBM if we didn’t do a massive, queer positive, murder mystery whodunnit on Hallowe’en weekend. But this time, it’s all original.

With some returning characters and some entirely new, this interactive theatre performance occurs all around one of the Annex’s most popular pubs. Audience members are encouraged to buy drinks, socialize with the actors, and invest in the performance simultaneously. Episodic in nature, the show aims to address some of 2018’s most relevant social and economic issues, through the gaze of patrons and staff alike. We provide snapshots of the lives that walk in and out of the pub’s doors on any given day, and display a combination of the comedies and tragedies that exist in the lives of young people. There is definitely something for everyone in this one of a kind theatre experience.

Runaway
August 2017
Playwright: Roger Goldsmith
Director: Victoria Dunsmore
Stage Manager: Melly Magrath
Runaway is a dramatic one act play which follows four years in the lives of Cathy and her disheveled Uncle Mike. After running away with her high school teacher and returning home, Cathy's life is changed forever. Being a teenager is hard enough, but Cathy's reputation and unconventional relationship asks audiences what sexual interference can do to a girl growing up.
Content Warning: The play deals with mature subject matter, love, sex, family, and the blurred line of statutory rape versus consensual sex with a minor.
Because the creative team at SBM felt so passionate about Roger’s piece, we have extended it with two collaborative creations from the perspective of characters based on those mentioned, but not seen, in his work. We hope to shed more light on all aspects of this subject and create space for thought and discussion for the audience.
